Enjoy an afternoon of traditional music

Come to play — Come to listen
Every month the SCVFA hosts an informal gathering for people who enjoy traditional acoustic music including bluegrass and Americana, swing, Cajun, old-time, Celtic and more.  It’s a place for traditional musicians to play together and a place for the public to listen to live music.

THE SETTING
Hoover School provides a courtyard for all seasons: shade trees and covered areas when it’s hot, open space when it’s sunny and cool, and lots of covered space when it rains. There are wooden courtyard benches seating under the trees, built-in seating along the walls of the buildings, and plenty of folding chairs if you need a seat.

The Open Mic is setup in the cafeteria along with tables and chairs for our listeners.

Open Mic
Jam participants are encouraged to sign up to play on stage, as solo performers or groups, for 15 to 20 minutes each. Musicians gain experience performing for a small audience and using a PA system, and non-musicians are entertained.

There is no open mic at the park in the Rose Garden in the summer. Occasional special events may preempt the open-mid performances.

Learning Groups
The beginners Slow Jam and the Tune Builder Circle for intermediate-level players are offered every month. Both are led by experienced musicians. Bring your acoustic instrument and practice playing with others, learn some new tunes, and pick up tips on jamming. See the Learning Page for more information.

Instruments
Non-amplified acoustic string instruments are welcome. Other instruments that typically fit in are accordions, harmonica, and pennywhistle.
